Did a bonfire cause the massive power outages earlier this month?

Remember the massive power outages that some said was part of a conspiracy to undermine the elections?

An initial investigation by the Department of Energy indicates it may have been caused by someone building a bonfire under some power lines, which in terms of conspiracies, does not take all that much group effort.

According to an ABS-CBNNews report, the DOE thinks the bonfire may have been built along the Binan-Calaca line in Talisay, Batangas. The bonfire may have caused powerlines to attach together and fail, the report said.

Auto-protection equipment for the transmission line also had a technical problem failing to prevent several power plants from shutting down. The incident affected the Calaca, Ilijan, Sta. Rita, San Lorenzo, Sual and Quezon power plants.

Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla said it’s unclear whether anyone will be punished for the incident, which caused rotating power outages in Metro Manila and left parts of Luzon in darkness on May 8.
