Like we always say, “When it comes to matters involving money, it pays to be paranoid.”

“The  Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is warning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) against a new scam using social media networks that aims to steal their hard-earned money,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

According to the DFA, its embassy in Abu Dhabi got information that some OFWs received messages sent through certain professional social networking sites regarding a “Middle East Compensation Package.”

The repport noted: “Recipients were instructed to make arrangements with the paying bank for the release of the said compensation. The phone number and email address of the contact person were also provided by the sender.”

The DFA revealed, “Upon consultation by the embassy with the bank’s IT and Fraud Department, it was determined that ‘phishing’ is evident in the message, and that it was designed to steal money. The bank requested the police to trace the phone number indicated in the message.”

The DFA added, “We urge the public to exercise caution in communicating with unknown individuals through social networking sites, particularly in providing sensitive personal information and responding to untrusted Internet offerings involving financial transactions.”
