DFA chief resigns from post due to health reasons

He’s the richest member of President Noynoy Aquino’s administration, so he can more than afford a long-overdue break. (His net worth in 2014 reached PHP838 million.)

“Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Albert del Rosario is resigning from his post, four months short of serving the full six-year term of President Aquino,” reports Aries Joseph Hegina on Inquirer.net.

Del Rosario’s resignation is effective Mar 7, 2016. He cited health concerns for his decision.

In a text message sent to media outlets, he stated, “Having served our country for over 10 years, I have respectfully asked the President if I could be allowed to step down earlier than midyear due to health issues.”

The report noted: “[However], Del Rosario will still accompany the President when the latter attends the special summit between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the United States in California this month.”

Sources say Del Rosario has been experiencing back problems. He even went through surgery late last year.

The report also revealed that “sources have said that Del Rosario’s ‘personal choice’ as his replacement was Undersecretary Laura del Rosario, head of the DFA International Economic Relations office.”

The two are not related.
