Dethroned ‘Mutya’ awarded PHP1.1m in damages

This former beauty queen has 1.1 million reasons to be happy. After 17 long years, the Court ruled in her favor and ordered the organizers of the now defunct Mutya ng Pilipinas to pay PHP1.1 million  in damages. Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 221 ruled that the former beauty queen Esabale Cabrera, Mutya ng Pilipinas 1997, was dethroned without due process. Cabrera was replaced by frist runner-up Annie Moraga on rumors that the former was pregnant and about to wed her boyfriend.

Cabrera was supposed to get PHP400,000 in prizes as well as PHP10,000 each for winning the Miss Lux and Miss Avon special awards. All these prizes went to Moraga. The 14-page ruling ordered officials of Miss Asia Pacific Quest and Carousel Productions, organizers of the Mutya pageant to pay for the damages.
