Detainees donate earnings to typhoon Maring victims

The bayanihan spirit truly lives on – even from behind bars.

Twenty seven political detainees from the Special Intensive Care Area of Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig did not think twice about responding to the call for assistance for Typhoon Maring victims. The detainees pooled their  meager earnings from their handicraft projects and made a donation to Karapatan, a human rights organization that regularly visits them.

All the detainees work on special craft projects such as replica jeepneys, pen holders or tissue holders from folded strips of old phone directory pages. Others make greeting cards with pressed flowers or weave old sacks into hammocks.

The small amount of money they make normally goes to their families or supplement their personal needs. And while the detainees said they needed the money, the political prisoners felt that this time, other people needed it more.

Their donations were sent to a community in Sampaloc, Manila which was severely affected by the flooding.
