It has been a week of transportation woes for the Philippines but it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. The process of creating the design for the Mega Manila subway, one of the city’s best chances to reduce traffic, is going to start in November, Philippines socioeconomic planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia said yesterday.

The plan will be submitted for President Rodrigo Duterte’s approval next month while the loan agreement with Japan is set for November during the ASEAN Summit.

The Mega Manila Subway Project is part of the Duterte administration’s Build Build Build initiative that has several infrastructure projects in the pipeline.

If approved, construction of the subway will start in December 2018 and is planned to be completed by 2022.

Phase 1 of the project will have 13 stations and will connect Mindanao Ave. in Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City.

Future plans for the subway also include extending it up to San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan and down to Dasmariñas City, Cavite.
