Following a recent cyberattack on the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS) of the Department of Interior and Local Government, the group Democracy.Net.PH is calling on the executive branch to back the passage of the Magna Carta for Philippine Internet Freedom.
“There must be a sense of urgency in the debates, discussions, and passage of the MCPIF through Congress. Let us not wait until it is too late, and our people suffer through greater damage through careless inaction,” the group said in a press statement.
Democracy.net.PH likewise expressed dismay over the government’s failure to secure key internet and information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure. The lack of security and methods has left different agencies open to cyberattacks from different quarters.
The LGPMS cyber attack, allegedly perpetrated by a group that called themselves “Anonymous Leyte”, exposed more than 5000 usernames, email addresses, and password hashes. The incident revealed information belonging to local government officials and offices nationwide.
The group said the compromise of a government database should push the government to establish solid Internet and ICT policies which protect not only netizens but cover government ICT networks and systems as well.
