Delays in local polls affecting canvassing of Senate votes

Embattled poll chairman Sixto Brillantes on Wednesday urged provincial board of canvassers to immediately send local certificates of canvass to the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) to avoid further delays in the canvassing of votes for the Senate posts.

Brillantes made the move as he explained that protests and other delays caused by hotly contested polls in local areas are affecting their own canvassing. He explained that provincial boards normally do not forward the certificates of canvass until a local candidate has been proclaimed. In cases of protests, the transmission of the certificates is also delayed.

On Wednesday, Brillantes suspended the scheduled proclamation of Senate race winners due to the small number of certificates of canvass received, GMA News reported.
