“Cardiac arrhythmia possibly due to caffeine toxicity.” (Cardiac arrhythmia is the condition wherein a person suffers from irregular heartbeat.)

That was written as the cause of death on the death certificate of a three-year-old girl in Bacolod City named Jesryl Barrido.

A report by ABS-CBN Iloilo correspondent Barbara Mijares revealed that the little girl died early this month.

The girl’s mother, Jennifer Rose Barrido, said her child did not show signs of being sick in the moments before she passed away.

She admitted, however, that the girl would take a few sips from her and her father’s coffee cups when they weren’t looking.

She related, “We don’t let her drink coffee but there are times when she sips from our cup when we are not looking. It was last December when her hands started shaking.”

While Dr. Grace Tan of the Bacolod City Health Office indicated that they could not specifically state “caffeine overdose” as the cause of the child’s death since her parents refused to have her remains autopsied.

Hence, the health office cited “caffeine toxicity” as the most likely cause of death.
