It’s actually a good idea.

“To more effectively address the problem of cellphone theft and help safeguard the privacy of users, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila de Lima on Tuesday, February 17, urged telecommunication firms to immediately install so-called “kill switch” software on their cellular phones,” reports Brian Maglungsod on InterAksyon.com.

The report noted: “Such an anti-theft security feature renders a stolen mobile phone inoperable, hence the term ‘kill switch,’ which also means remote deactivation — killing the phone remotely.”

De Lima said, “Consumers who work hard and save money for their phones only to be victimized by criminals will benefit from this small effort by our telcos.” She added that “these types of software helped bring down the incidence of mobile phone theft in two cities in the United States, and in London.” She referred to it as a “common sense” solution to address the problem.

However, as the report indicated, “De Lima acknowledged that there is a need for Congress to pass a legislation to compel telcos to install the software, adding that the DOJ can only recommend to the telcos such a move.”
