We can’t blame her for being stubborn about this issue.

“Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila de Lima is not backing down from her earlier position to suspend the visiting privileges of inmates at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City until gang leaders cooperate with authorities in finding the perpetrator of the grenade attack in the national penitentiary that killed an inmate and injured 19 others,” reports Brian Maglungsod on InterAksyon.com.

The report noted: “De Lima said the inmates’ gang leaders should surrender the perpetrator first even as she admitted that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) had already identified a suspect based on eye witnesses’ accounts.”

The Justice Secretary explained, “That is my position right now though of course I am not saying that my decision is irreversible,” De Lima said adding that she would have to wait recommendations from Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director Franklin Bucayu.”

She added: “There is a reason why we impose the visitation ban. Remember, it was because of the grenade explosion incident. It is next to impossible for (the gang leaders) not to know who is behind the incident. It’s either they are afraid of the inmates who were transferred to the NBI (or) they are controlled by them that’s why even at the level of gang leaders they are also afraid and are refusing to cooperate.”

It’s worth pointing out that De Lima “temporarily lifted the ban during the feast of the Sto.Nino, which also coincided with the fourth day of the visit of Pope Francis to the country, but it was restored thereafter.”
