Call it creative capital sourcing.
Davao del Norte-based businesswoman named Fructusa Llania shared her rather “morbid” strategy is getting capital for her venture in dzMM’s Radyo Negosyo, which is hosted by Carl Balita.
Llania said that back when she was desperate for a source of income, she asked her friends for ‘abuloy’ in advance. She related in Filipino, “I told my friends, ‘You know, we Pinoys have this tradition of helping people when they’re already dead. How can I make use of your help when I’m already in a coffin?'”
“Abuloy” is the cash donation that is collected when somebody dies.
Llania was able to collect PHP7,000 in 2000 from her friends, which she used to start a peanut butter business. After 15 years, the business has grown with other food product offerings. In fact, Llania related that she now earns “at least PHP400,000 monthly from her peanut butter products alone.”
