The Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City is expected to reopen at 8:00 p.m. on Monday night after canceling more than 20 flights from different airlines since Sunday evening.
Amid a heavy downpour, Cebu Pacific flight 5J 971 tried to land and overshot the runway at around 7 p.m. on Sunday. The plane, manned by a certain Capt. Oropeza, veered off toward the grassy portion of the airport. The flight came from Manila and was carrying 165 passengers. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. However, no aircraft has been able to leave the airport since the incident. Philippine Airlines (PAL) has issued an advisory seeking the public’s understanding for the cancellation of its flights to and from Davao.
It said it will be accommodating passengers who are willing to be re-routed to General Santos City. The flag carrier has commissioned a much bigger aircraft for its General Santos – Manila flight this afternoon. PAL added that it will shoulder the land transfer of passengers from Davao to Gen San. There will be no rebooking fees and affected passengers will be provided with food and drinks free of charge.
