Cagayan de Oro Representative Benjo Benaldo, husband of Brazilian model-actress Daiana Menezes, is now at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City after he was found wounded and bleeding from an apparent suicide attempt Thursday night.
According to reports, Benaldo was alone in his room at the House of Representatives when two members of his staff heard a bang. Benaldo was brought to New Era hospital on Commonwealth Avenue between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Deputy Majority Leader Miro Quimbo, who visited Benaldo at the hospital, said congressman was conscious the whole time.
The bullet reportedly entered below Benaldo’s heart and may have hit his lungs.
Benaldo’s term as Cagayan de Oro representative ends on June 30. Menezes, whom he married in the United States, was in the news recently over cryptic messages she posted on social networking sites that hinted at rape and domestic violence.
Menezes has since gone on the record to say she was not a victim of abuse.
“He’s (been) going through a lot of things lately,” Representative Quimbo said in a report.
