In May 1994, Miss India Sushmita Sen won the crown in the Miss Universe pageant held in the Philippines. At least four mothers who gave birth in the same year named their daughters after the beauty queen — nevermind if Sushmita is such a challenge to pronounce and remember. Filipinos love having unique names anyway.
More than two decades later, the real Sushmita Sen flew back to Manila to judge the 65th Miss Universe Pageant. Looking as beautiful as ever, she graciously expressed her thanks for the love and support she got from her Filipino fans during her reign.
Sushmita was interviewed by Jessica Soho in the show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. Sushmita fondly recalled her experiences in the pageant. She shared her thoughts on how she was able to answer her pageant question: “What is the essence of being a woman?”
Four Filipina ladies who shared her name gave Sushmita a warm welcome.
“What? You are all Sushmita?!” said the beauty queen upon seeing the girls. She asked the girls to send her regards to their parents.
Sushmita actually means a beautiful smile, the beauty queen graciously explained.
One of the girls in the group was named Sushmita Dayanara, her second name was from the 1993 Miss Universe winner Dayanara Torres.
