In Cubao, stroke victim was source of amusement to passersby

Guys, next time you see someone lying helpless on the sidewalk, don’t just assume they’re drunk.

In this jolly season when we are supposed to feel more caring and forgiving towards each other, it’s a pity that there are those who find amusement in the misery of others.

Our Good Samaritan (GS), 29 and working in an NGO, was in the vicinity of Cubao X around 7pm yesterday when he noticed groups of people either staring at or taking photos of a man lying on the street and assumed to be drunk. Which he wasn’t. The man suffered a stroke. “I looked closely and saw the guy was wide awake. His eyes were wide open and he was trying to respond. He was struggling to move,” GS wrote on his Facebook wall.

He reported it to the guard, who dismissed him by saying “lasing lang yan”. So GS told the guard that if the guy dies, it would be under his watch and, thus, his responsibility.

“That’s when he finally decided to go inside the building and look for someone. I was asking people if anyone knew emergency numbers that we can contact just in case. Only the poor old lady selling cigarettes and candies on the street bothered to take me seriously. She gave me an emergency number, apparently she got it from a radio program,” GS recounts.

A nurse arrived to help. Turns out, the man, possibly in his 40s, had a stroke. A passerby — god bless his soul — volunteered to drive the man to the hospital.

“I must say that I am totally outraged by the apathy that I witnessed,” says GS. “So many people could have done so much more yet they chose to take pictures and laugh instead of trying to do something about it. What’s worse is that they were making fun of people who actually care.”
