Crime in Metro Manila up by 270%

It’s been a busy 10 months for criminals in Metro Manila — and for the police officers tasked to document them.

According to the National Capital Region Police Office, the number of crime incidents reported between January and October 2013 soared 270 percent compared to the same period last year.

The NCRPO, which covers the security of the entire metropolitan area, said it tallied 17,091 incidents compared to 4,614 last year, reports Pilipino Star NgayonThe increase was due to a top-level directive of counting all crime incidents that were reported, including traffic crimes and those that happened in barangays.

Of the 17,091 crimes, authorities say it resolved 7,418 incidents, or a crime solution efficiency of 43.4 percent.

The Philippine National Police has been particular with the crime data gathering, cracking the whip on erring officials who tamper with the numbers. Recently it sacked at least three police officials in Metro Manila.
