It’s THAT time of the year for fashion mags. September — when the issue is as thick as the Yellow Pages, when the advertisers come pouring in, when the editors make sure the issue is the most fabulous ever. This is certainly the case for the country’s top fashion bibles. And with the upcoming launch of Hola’s first Philippine edition (more on that cover in a separate post), this is going to be a sizzling September.
METRO
ABS-CBN Publishing
Cost: PHP150
Creative director: Patrick Ty
Photographer: Marlon Pecjo
Hair and makeup: Ricci Chan
Metro has glam-o-momma Ruffa Gutierrez on its two — yes, two — covers. Both shot by Doc Marlon Pecjo, a celeb fave, in Florence, Italy. The first cover features Ruffa in a very interesting-looking, textured red dress from Bottega Veneta while the second one shows off her sexiness, wrapped only in a black trench and wearing a pair of dominatrix-style boots from Salvatore Ferragamo. The first strangely oozes Filipiniana, maybe because of those fascinatingly deconstructed butterfly sleeves, but it’s the second cover that we find more newsstand-stopping. Ruffa looks like she’s a vampire ready to suck your blood. In style, of course.

PREVIEW
Summit Media
Cost: PHP150
Editor: Pauline Juan
Creative director: Vince Uy
Makeup: Fanny Serrano
Hair: Raymond Santiago
Preview trumps Metro’s two-cover special by releasing three (four if you consider the extra one for their digital edition) different covers, featuring it girl Georgina Wilson. In “The Avant-Garde” cover styled by fashion director Daryl Chang, George wears a Peter Pilotto creation that’s all about bold and arresting prints. Cover number two, called “The Romantic,” will make you stop and stare. While it is reminiscent of a couple of the mag’s past covers, this Vince Uy-styled masterpiece show us a Georgina like you’ve never seen before: with barely-there makeup. Just as scene-stealing is that gorgeous Randall Solomon dress. The last Georgina cover has to be the least interesting. Called “Tha Glamazon” and styled by fashion editor-at-large, Liz Uy, it shows Georgina posing in a Gucci creation and with blue hair. Very Katy Perry. Let’s not forget the extra cover. Styled by the mag’s creative director, Vince Uy (again), the digital cover called “The Androgynous” expectedly has Georgina in a short ‘do and a coat. Well, that pose is kind of interesting — we love how it looks like she has a leg attached to her tummy.

MEGA
One Mega Group
Editor: Sari Yap
As for Mega’s offering this fashion month, we haven’t seen their cover (covers?) yet but we heard that it features Anne Curtis and was shot in South America. Trend watch: Cover shoots abroad. They don’t necessarily translate to a spike in newsstand sales, but it’s a bait to bring in luxury advertisers.
