A Philippine communist coalition’s consultant has died after he was shot and killed inside a bus early this morning.

Randy Malayao, 49 years old, was a consultant for the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP). According to reports, he was shot at around 2am today while sleeping in a bus en route to his hometown San Pablo, Isabela province.

Malayao boarded the bus in Quezon City and planned to get off at Santiago, Isabela, ABS-CBN News reported.

It was around 2am when the unidentified assailant boarded the bus in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya and shot the victim, Nueva Vizcaya police director Chief Insp. Giovanni Cejes said.

Malayao was immediately killed after the gunman fired two shots, according to CNN Philippines.

The suspect then fled the scene by boarding a vehicle driven by an accomplice, Rappler reported. Two unidentified suspects were reportedly seen riding a Yamaha Mio scooter near the crime scene.

The NDF is the political wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines and represents it in peace negotiations in the Philippines and abroad.

Malayao was arrested in May 2008 after being tagged in the assassination of a congressperson. He was eventually released in October 2012 because of lack of evidence.
