Coming soon: A meteor shower and a lunar eclipse

The Lyrids, an annual meteor shower observed in late April for more than 2,600 years, will be most visible from the evening of April 22, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

According to Pagasa’s Astronomical Diary, the shower typically generates a dozen bright and fast meteors every hour. Far from the spectacular shower recorded by the Chinese in 687 B.C. when “stars fell like rain”, but probably enough for a cheap romantic evening.

“Unfortunately, a bright Gibbous Moon will drown out fainter meteors during the pre-dawn viewing,” Pagasa says.

Further in astronomical phenomena, a partial lunar eclipse will be visible from the Philippines on April 26 from 2:03 a.m. to 6:11 a.m.
