Restored Comelec website has less vulnerabilities

With just a few days before May 9, the Commission of Elections website is back to regular programming. This time around, they’re promising that the information of the voters are safe.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the poll body’s website went back up on Tuesday evening. It now has a stronger firewall and limited functionalities making it hard for hackers to penetrate the website, Philippine Star reports.

With a limited funtionality comes a limited attack surface area, Jimenez explained. It’s easier to protect because there are less vulnerabilities.

The current website’s functionalities only include the list of voters, deactivated status, downloadable resolutions as well as the newly-input templates for ballots.

They are still continuing to improve the security features of the website, Jimenez added.

The Comelec website was defaced on Mar 27 and hackers leaked the details of registered voters. As a result, it was down for more than a month.
