COMELEC wanst to postpone Sangguniang Kabataan polls again

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) clearly isn’t looking forward to the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.

“The COMELEC will push for another postponement of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls until the next barangay elections in 2016,” reports Sheila Crisostomo in The Philippine Star.

COMELEC Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. was quoted as saying, “We want the SK polls postponed so that it will not get in the way of our preparations for the 2016 elections. We are proposing to synchronize it with the barangay elections scheduled in October 2016.”

Brillantes pointed out that if the SK polls push through, the COMELEC would have to stop the ongoing voter’s registration for three months to prepare for the SK polls.

Moreover, the report said “Brillantes has reservations on spending some PHP2 billion just to hold the SK elections.”

The report noted: “Republic Act 10632 postponed the holding of the SK polls that were supposed to be in October last year.”

Under Republic Act 10632, the SK polls schedule was moved to “a date to be determined by the COMELEC between October 28, 2014 and February 23, 2015.”

In any case, the COMELEC says it wants the SK scrapped because it “only boosted political dynasties, as most of those who run for SK positions are children or relatives of traditional politicians.”
