Comelec: Teachers on poll duty will not get additional pay, it’s still PHP4,500

There’s no easy way to break such bad news.

“The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced in a resolution that teachers who will serve as part of the local Boards of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in the general elections in May will not be getting additional pay,” reports Mayen Jaymalin in The Philippine Star.

Even with constant appeals to increase their honorarium, BEIs will only receive a total of PHP4,500 just like in past elections.

Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista had earlier reported that the commission was looking at ways to provide teachers higher pay despite the limited allocation of the Department of Budget and Management. Well, apparently, they failed to find ways to increase the teachers’ fees.

The Comelec said the teachers’ additional fees were not included in their initial PHP20.3 billion budget request for the 2016 polls. For the record, the Comelec ended up getting only PHP15.65 billion.

That still doesn’t explain why teachers keep getting the short end of the stick in this scenario.
