Comelec takes voter registration drive to Twitter

Storm tinseltown and the heavens for voters.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has taken on this strategy and has enlisted both celebrities and members of the clergy in its campaign for voter registration for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in October.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez sent out messages to celebrities, priests and pastors on Twitter, seeking their assistance in engaging their respective followers to make a beeline to their district offices for registration.

“We want to leverage their huge numbers of followers, and disseminate the information as wide as possible,” Jimenez explained in a recent interview.

Among those whom Jimenez asked assistance are model Solenn Heussaff, singer Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, crooners Christian Bautista, and Jed Madela, and hosts Jugs Jugueta, and Chino Singson.

“You’ve heard about the ongoing #voterRegistration for brgy polls? Be great if you encouraged your fans to register! thanks!” Jimenez wrote in his Twitter post (@jabjimenez).

On Sunday, the Comelec spokesperson took to Twitter his appeal for more voter registration as well, sending messages to both priests and pastors active in the microblogging site.

“Dear priests and pastors who are also on twitter: could you please encourage your congregation to go to #voterRegistration after service?” the poll official wrote.

The 10-day voter registration for the synchronized barangay and SK elections started on July 22.

Comelec chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. maintained the commission won’t be extending the registration period despite calls to extend it.

The elections are scheduled on Oct. 28.–MM
