This glitch will come back to haunt us all. When the elections come around, there are sure to be people who will suggest that something fishy is going on even if there isn’t.

“The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is now investigating the glitch that affected some 1.9 million biometrics data files from local Comelec offices across the country. Moreover, Comelec spokesman revealed that 1,728 biometrics files had either unclear pictures or fingerprints of voters,” reports Jet Villa on InterAksyon.com.

The report noted: “Jimenez said the corrupted data files are contained on compact discs (CDs) received by Comelec central office from the election officers in the municipalities and city through courier services and personal delivery. When the CDs were checked, the Comelec found that the files were damaged.”

Jimenez was quoted as saying, “The data went through various processes — burning (transfer of data from hard discs to CDs), transportation, opening of the CDs — so sometimes the data gets corrupted.”

Despite that, Jimenez said that “the corrupted files could still be recovered as they have backup files at the local Comelec offices.” The Comelec is now concerned with the 1,728 files with unclear data which may not have backup files.

The report added, “Jimenez said the election officers who submitted the files with unclear pictures or fingerprints face an administrative case if they fail to secure backup copy of the data.”
