Colombian with 79 cocaine pellets in stomach arrested at Manila airport

A Colombian national was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) yesterday for allegedly attempting to smuggle PHP8.89 million (US$177,000) worth of cocaine into the Philippines.

But Pedraza Quijano, the suspect arrested, might have slipped by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), if it wasn’t for a tip from the United States’ Department of Homeland Security.

He wasn’t technically carrying drugs on him, because they were inside of his stomach. After performing an x-ray on Quijano, they discovered cocaine-filled pellets — 79 of them to be exact — inside of his stomach.

According to an ABS-CBN News report, Philippine authorities waited for Quijano to arrive and arrested him as soon as he got off his plane at NAIA’s terminal 3.

PDEA said, they had to wait a whole 24 hours for Quijano to excrete all of them.

The pellets will be brought to a laboratory for examination, while Quijano will undergo more drug testing.

The PDEA is now the sole agency in charge of the administration’s war on illegal drugs after President Rodrigo Duterte issued a memorandum last Oct. 12, suspending the Philippine National Police’s role in anti-drug operations due to allegations of human rights abuses.
