The cocolisap effect: No more buko pie

Buko pie vendors are now lacking their main ingredient.

“It seems like they have to do without buko now that the coconut industry is crippled by the scale insect infestation, or locally known as ‘cocolisap,'” reports Likha Cuevas-Miel on InterAksyon.com.

Sol Pahud, one of the owners of the The Original Buko Pie told InterAksyon.com that they “already felt the tight buko supply two years ago, when the infestation started to ravage coconut plantations in Laguna and the rest of Calabarzon.”

The report noted: “The Department of Agriculture has recently issued a special quarantine, restricting the transport of fruits and other farm crops outside of 4 provinces in the Calabarzon that have been infested by the scale insect.”

It’s estimated that around 1.8 million coconut trees affected by the cocolisap.
