The Philippine Coast Guard in Coron, Palawan has confiscated a shipment of scaly anteaters bound for North Harbor in Manila.
According to the Coast Guard, members of Field Station District 41 and the PCG K-9 unit boarded M/V Maria Lydia on a tip from a concerned citizen.
“Twenty three scaly anteaters were found abandoned at the rooftop of the vessel,” the Coast Guard said.
The scaly anteaters were confiscated and will be turned over to the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development.
Anteaters are an endangered species and are prized by some Chinese as both a delicacy and as medicine. Last week, the Coast Guard found 400 boxes of frozen anteaters on the F/V Min Long Yu, a fishing vessel that ran aground at the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park.
