Some 1,000 delegates from Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation are in Boracay to meet on various issues concerning the regional group.
So to spruce up the island, or at least make it smell better, “septic tanks of several hotels in the island have been treated with a concoction that effectively removed the waste water’s unwelcome odor,” writes Edd K. Usman on MB.com.ph.
How are they able to do that? Through an ecology-friend septic system called Eco-Sep. It’s a waste water treatment that’s been enhanced with organominerals.
According to the report, it was invented by Dr. Merlinda Palencia, “whose research for the project was funded by DOST agency Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).”
It was DOST Secretary Mario Go Montejo who told a few journalists covering the meeting on the island about the Pinoy invention. “It’s not only the smell (that was controlled) but we also check the absence of coliform bacteria,” Secretary Montejo was quoted as saying. Alas, you still cannot drink the water.
Eco-Sep is a“self-sustaining and portable waster water treatment system that uses an innovative combination of bio-stimulation and filture.”
While it sounds most applicable in evacuation and disaster areas, may we suggest it also be used during music festivals and huge-ass events like Papal visits? Because: ‘memba this?
