MANILA, Philippines – The race for the hosting rights to the 2019 FIBA World Cup is down to two candidates: China and the Philippines.

FIBA on Monday announced that the 2019 event “will be played in Asia, with China and the Philippines as the two candidates left in the race to host it.”

FIBA made the decision during the first meeting of its Executive Committee last March 12 to 13.

The FIBA Central Board will make the final decision regarding the 2019 FIBA World Cup when it meets in June.

China had earlier aimed to host the 2014 FIBA World Cup and will host the 2015 FIBA Asia Championships. Meanwhile, the Philippines hosted the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship.

The host nation gets an automatic berth to the FIBA World Cup.

Aside from China and the Philippines, Germany and France, Qatar, and Turkey were also shortlisted as hosts for the 2019 event.

Meanwhile, Germany, Turkey, and Qatar are already bidding to host the 2023 edition of the FIBA World Cup.
