Chess grandmaster Wesley So stays on the top spot of Wijk standings

National Chess Federation of the Philippines, why did you let him go?

23-year-old Filipino-born chess grandmaster Wesley So kept the top spot in the 79th Tata Steel Masters Chess tournament held in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.

So’s most recent match was a draw by Ukrainian Pavel Eljanov, world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway and resurgent Wei Yi of China. 

According to a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “So was unable to break Eljanov’s defenses and agreed to split the point in 38 moves of a Guioco Piano.”

So is now playing for the United States. He transferred to the US team in 2014 after difficulties with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines. 

He emphasized that he will always be “Filipino at heart.”

The Tata Steel Masters Chess tournament is an annual chess fixture which runs for 13 rounds. 7 roundshave been completed since Sat, Jan 21.
