It won’t get their blessing.
“After President Noynoy Aquino raised the possibility of a term extension and Constitutional amendment on Thursday, August 14, Church leaders rose up in arms in protest,” reports Tempo.
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), was quoted as saying, “I cannot lend support to constitutional amendments that merely serve the purposes of one office-holder or one class of persons.”
Villegas also made it clear that he wasn’t amused by moves to amend the Constitution.
“Constitutional amendments are justified only in the measure that they redound to the benefit of the nation and address long-festering problems arising out of ambiguities in the Constitution,” he explained.
