On Thu, Aug 6, members of the Cavite State University (CVSU)-Indang student council admitted to inviting Vice President Jejomar Binay to the school’s student assembly on Mon, Aug 3.
In an interview over radio dzMM Thursday, CvSU student council president Vincent Bae said inviting Binay is part of their program to get the students involved and informed about the current situation of the country.
“Ang student council ay gumawa ng liham na naka-address sa pangalawang pangulo para malaman ang kanyang panig sa nangyayari po sa ating bansa, dahil naniniwala po kami na ‘yung mga mag-aaral natin ay dapat maging involved (The studnet council wrote a letter to the Vice President to find out his take on the state of the nation. We believe students should be involved),” he said.
Bae said that the student council has the power to suspend classes for important activities.
He also said that they hinted to the school administrators that Binay is coming for the “student assembly.”
“We have a Constitution and bylaws that says the student council has the right to suspend ng classes if there are student activities. We told the CvSU president (Chavez) that we would have a student assembly,” he explained in Filipino.
CvSU President Divina Chavez already denied she knew Binay was coming to the campus of 18,000 students to deliver his “true” state of the nation address (TSONA).
Chavez was the one who signed the memo addressing college deans about the required attendance of students in the activity.
Bae said that it is the student council of CvSU that should answer on the controversy of requiring students for Binay’s TSONA.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) earlier said it is already looking into the matter.
Meanwhile, Bae said that to be fair, they have also invited other possible presidential candidates like Senator Grace Poe.
In fact, he said, they already had former Senator Panfilo Lacson as a speaker in one of their forums.
