Let this be a cautionary tale for everyone.

“A 29-year-old Canadian national named Firth McEachern filed a complaint before the Quezon City Police District after his high-end cellphones were allegedly stolen and social networking accounts hacked to blackmail him,” reports Francis Wakefield in Tempo.

The report noted: “McEachern said his gadgets were stolen by three unidentified persons at 8:30 p.m. last Wednesday, Apr 22, while he was on board a bus on going throgh Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City.”

Shortly after his cellphones were taken, McEachern said the suspects then accessed his Facebook and other social media accounts. They then used them to blackmail him.

The suspects presumably threatened to wreak havoc using his social media accounts unless he paid up.

McEachern’s case has been turned over to the Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group in Camp Crame, Quezon City for proper investigation and disposition.
