The days of plastic are nearly over.
“Caloocan City, through Ordinance No. 0503 (Series of 2013), has become the latest local government unit in Metro Manila to ban most plastic and Styrofoam packaging materials,” reports Nathaniel R. Melican in The Philippine Daily Inquirer.
However, packaging for processed snacks, frozen food, and bottled water are exempted from the ban.
The report explained that “business establishments in Caloocan are given six months from the effectivity of the ordinance to comply.” After that, violators will be fined PHP1,000 for the first offense, PHP3,000 for the second offense, and PHP5,000 and cancellation of their business permit for a year for the third offense.
Muntinlupa, Las Piñas, Pasig, Quezon City, Pasay, Marikina, Mandaluyong, Manila, and Makati have already regulated their use of plastic.
