What a shame.
“A manhunt is on for Nelson Nazareno — the chairman of Barangay 139 in Tirad Pass, Bagong Barrio, Caloocan City — after two men arrested for hijacking identified him as the alleged leader of their operation,” reports Rey Galupo in The Philippine Star.
The suspects — Romero Bacod and Remegio Umali — were nabbed in Quezon City last Wed, Apr 22. They were caught wearing police uniforms. They had stopped Ernesto Oite’s delivery truck along Palanza Street in Quezon City shortly before midnight.
Oite thought it was just a routine police check, so he alighted from his truck and approached the suspects. However, he was surprised when the two forced him at gunpoint to drive the vehicle for them. Luckily for Oite, he was able to escape. He flagged down a tricycle and then stopped to tell his story when he saw some policemen on patrol.
The report noted that “the truck was recovered along Pureza street in Sampaloc, Manila and the suspects were arrested.
Bacod and Umali claimed that Nazareno ordered them to hijack the truck.
By the time a team from the Caloocan police and the city government’s department of public safety and management went to Barangay 139, Nazareno had fled.
