Cakes are now included in BIR’s ‘no-gift’ policy

Generous taxpayers, please note that giving of cakes to your favorite BIR employees is no longer allowed.

Bureau of Internal Revenue employees cannot receive foodstuff, birthday cakes, and tokens.. no matter how small or cheap, not even on their birthdays.

Commissioner Caesar Dulay isn’t being a party pooper. He’s just trying to help end graft and corruption in the bureau.

According to a report by the Manila Bulletin, a birthday cake for a BIR employee was supposed to be delivered at the bureau’s Project Management and Implementation Service (PMIS) department at the BIR main building over the weekend.

However, the security guards at the lobby did not allow the cake to be brought to the employee’s room.

The PHP500 cake was supposedly paid for by her colleagues.

The guards explained that they were just implementing orders “to politely return any gift that may be delivered.”

The BIR chief has earlier issued a memorandum to employees nationwide to refrain from accepting gifts.

The silver lining? Deliveries of packed foods from fastfood eateries are allowed.

So perhaps instead of cakes, birthday gifts for BIR employes should be in the form of buckets of chicken and tubs of spaghetti.
