Crooks don’t choose a time or place.

A businessman who just got out of mass was killed while his wife was injured last night when an unidentified assailant aboard a motorcycle shot them down inside the compound of the Redemptorist Church in Barangay (Village) 5, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The shooting incident happened around 8pm, radio station RMN reported. The victims were identified as Alex and Maria Theresa Yao, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

Insp. Florentino Abalayan, deputy chief of Station 2, said Alex succumbed to at least three gunshot wounds on the left side of his chest and chin, while his wife was hit in the left hand but survived.

The couple was just about to leave the church compound on their white Mercedes Benz when an assailant in a black ball cap, mask, and jacket shot them, the Inquirer report added. The gunman fled the scene on a motorcycle which was driven by another person wearing a jacket and a red helmet.

The couple was rushed to the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital, however, Alex was declared dead on arrival at 9:30pm.

The motive behind the crime is still unknown.

Police are still trying to get surveillance footage outside the church to gather more information in the investigation, ABS-CBN News reported.
