Bus driver in Skyway crash dies, death toll now 19

The so-called main character in the December 16 Skyway crash has died.

“Carmelo Calatcat, 39, the driver of the speeding Don Mariano Transit Corp. bus that fell off the Skyway on December 16 onto a van on the West Service Road below, has died,” reports InterAksyon.com.

The report revealed that Calatcat had been treated at the ICU of the  Parañaque Doctors Hospital for nine days. He sustained severe injuries in the crash which many people are blaming him — and his bus company — for.

Investigators found that Calatcat had been driving at least 120 kilometers per hour when the accident happened. The speed limit for buses on Skyway is 80 kilometers per hour. The bus had worn out tires so it was inevitable that an accident would happen. The bus had crashed through the Skyway railing and had fallen onto a container van below on SLEx between the Bicutan and Sucat exits.

Calatcat’s death increases the Skyway death toll to 19.
