An official of the Bureau of Corrections was shot dead this morning near the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City.
Porferio Bergula, who works at the prison’s medium-security compound, was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding men at about 10am when he was at a market some 400 meters away from Bilibid, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports. The killers fled in the direction of San Guillermo Street in Putatan Village after the shooting.
Bergula was rushed to the Medical Center hospital, but was declared dead on arrival, according to Manila Bulletin.
Investigators are still determining the motive behind Bergula’s killing, which occurred just two months after his colleague, Ruperto Traya Jr., was gunned down by unidentified assailants in the same city. When Traya was killed, he was the second-highest official in the bureau’s records office, which processed the release papers of convicted killer-rapist Antonio Sanchez, the Philippine Star reported.
Sanchez was supposed to have been granted an early release from Bilibid until public outcry forced the government to shelve the plan.
