Bureau of Immigration nabs 80 foreigners at 168 Mall

How did so many of them get away with it? (Rhetorical question, folks.)

“Agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) recently rounded up some 80 alien stallholders inside the popular bargain shopping center 168 in Binondo, Manila for violation of immigration laws,” reports Jun Ramirez in the Manila Bulletin.

According to BI Officer-in-Charge Siegfred Mison, “almost all of them could hardly speak and understand English, or Tagalog.” Thus, they have been detained at the BI holding facilities in Bicutan, Taguig. They will be charged with violating immigration laws as most of them entered the country as tourists. Needless to say, they don’t have the necessary working permits or business licenses to legitimize their stalls at 168 Mall.

The report said that the foreigners, who are mostly from Hong Kong, will be placed under deportation proceedings by the BI board of commissioners.
