Today’s Manila Bulletin reveals the conservative newspaper’s rare sense of humor. The report, about Sandiganbayan building a bigger prison cell, quotes a security guard who was, apparently, in a joking mood, “This is not a mere co-incidence, Sandiganbayan really needs a bigger detention cell dahil sobrang dumadami ang mga magnanakaw sa gobyerno.”
But Sandiganbayan Sherrif cheif Alberto dela Cruz quickly denied this. “He clarified that the construction of additional detention cell is being rushed not just for the the pork barrel cases but mainly to provide a little comfort and sanitation for detainees.” The cell currently measures 15 square meters and meant to fit only 10 persons, with male and female prisoners sharing the same space. The new detention facility will measure 50 square meters and construction started on Wednesday.
