Building permit for DMCI’s Torre de Manila suspended

Score one for heritage conservationists.

Claiming that the ‘sacred sightline’ to the monument of the national hero should be preserved, the Manila City Council on Tuesday passed a resolution calling for the temporary suspension of the building permit issued last year to the developers of Torre de Manila condominium project near Rizal Park, reports Erika Sauler of Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The Manila City Council unanimously voted to suspend the permit issued to contractor DMCI to give way to a protest lodged by activist tour guide Carlos Celdran, who campaigned against the project.

The firm’s Torre de Manila condominium, a 41-story structure, would tower over the Rizal Monument at the heart of Luneta, obstructing the landmark’s sightline.

The council put a hold on the permit, issued by the previous administration despite an ongoing investigation of the body.
