The more they keep him there, the more he has to cough up.
“British national George ‘Dougie’ Keiller, 59, collapsed due to his chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on the last leg of his journey to meet his Filipina fiancée Evangeline Go, 54,” reports Emily Kent Smith in the Daily Mail.
Keiller collapsed on Feb 11. He woke up six days later in a room at the Polymedic General Hospital in Cagayan de Oro City. He had been hooked to a life support system. After six weeks, he’s still in the hospital because he claims he can’t afford to pay the medical bill which has reached PHP298,214.40.
The report claimed that “doctors at the Polymedic General Hospital have said they will not discharge him until they are paid at least half of his ever increasing bill.”
Keiller was quoted as saying, “After more than six weeks I’m now just desperate for this nightmare to end.”
Keiler added that prior to traveling he had arranged travel insurance through the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). He said he was offered free coverage as a Royalties Gold account holder.
That said, the report quoted an RBS spokesperson, who stated that “the bank is aware of Keiller’s situation and said that the case is being looked into.” Meanwhile, the report revealed that a Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson also said, “We are aware of the hospitalization of a British National in the Philippines. We are providing consular assistance.”
