In a way, it makes sense for Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Sixto Brillantes to pick a successor whom he’s not friendly with. This way, he won’t be accused of trying to maintain some influence over the Comelec.
“Brillantes reiterated his position that Justice Secretary Leila de Lima is a competent candidate to replace him in the poll body when he retires next month,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.
When asked why he recommended de Lima to succeed him in the poll body, Brillantes replied in Filipino, “She’s always mad at me and criticizing me, so I recommended Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.”
Brillantes revealed, however, that “De Lima was uncomfortable with his recommendation.” She had reportedly told him, “Don’t push me too much.”
The report noted: “Brillantes said that if de Lima will not accept the position, his second recommendation is Commissioner Roberto Lim, a senior member of the poll body who already ‘knows everything about the job.'”
The report pointed out that “De Lima earlier said she is not interested in the Comelec post.”
She was quoted as saying, “I’m not interested in the Comelec post. That is my position as of the moment. And again, the President has not said anything yet.”
