BreadTalk SG says sorry for Lee Kuan Yew ‘tribute bun’ fiasco

The bread place has outlets in the country, so Pinoys are already familiar with the brand. However, it seems that BreadTalk in Singapore has drawn some flak lately.

“On Wednesday, March 25, Singapore-based bread store BreadTalk had posted a promotional poster on its social media platforms where it announced the launch of a new bun called ‘Lee bu kai ni’ which means ‘can’t leave you’ – a play on Lee’s surname,” reports Marketing-interactive.com.

BreadTalk had priced the tribute bun at SG$2 and said that the proceeds would be donated to charity.

Unfortunately, many Singaporeans said that the very thought of the bun was in bad taste.

BreadTalk in Singapore has since pulled out the bun. On its Facebook page, the company stated: “We would like to convey our deepest apologies with regard to the commemorative bun ‪#‎rememberingLKY‬ which was introduced at BreadTalk outlets today, 25 March 2015.”

The statement added: “We regret that this product has caused much concern and appreciate the public’s feedback which we take very seriously. Our intent was to create a commemorative product in memory of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew whom we deeply respect. Together with all Singaporeans, the passing of our Founding Prime Minister is deeply felt by all of us at BreadTalk. Nevertheless, we are made aware that this manner of remembering his legacy was insensitive in light of the current context.”

BreadTalk then explained, “As was our original intent to commit 100% of the buns’ sales proceeds to charity, BreadTalk will still be donating SG$30,000; the projected sales proceeds, to Community Chest.”

We would like to convey our deepest apologies with regard to the commemorative bun #rememberingLKY which was introduced…
