Tropical cyclone Trami has intensified into a typhoon as it hurtled towards the Philippines on Sunday, about a week after Typhoon Mangkhut slammed into northern Luzon, the state weather bureau said.
Trami was 1,260 kilometers east of Central Luzon at 8 a.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gusts of 145 kph gusts, said PAGASA.
The typhoon will likely enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday afternoon and will be named ‘Paeng’, the agency earlier said.
Trami is expected to hover close to Batanes province and other neighboring northern areas, which bore the brunt of Ompong’s onslaught. It may also enhance the habagat or southwest monsoon over southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, said PAGASA.
The storm will enter as authorities dug for the survivors of a landslides triggered by ‘Ompong’ and monsoon rains in the mountain town of Itogon, Benguet and the city of Naga, Cebu.
Ompong, the world’s strongest storm so far this year, left at least 95 dead across Luzon and some P14 billion worth of damage in agriculture, authorities earlier said.
