First of all, apologies to our parents and teachers. We now know what entitled brats we were back in the day, thanks in part to this viral photo of a kid studying on a Cebu sidewalk on a McDonalds property.
First uploaded by Joyce Torrefrance on Facebook last June 23, this photo of 9-year-old Daniel Cabrera has since gone viral on social media. It’s inspired a lot of people, and making several others — us included — sorry for our past entitlements.
“Mcdonald’s Mandaue Reclamation Area restaurant manager Iris Prak said that Daniel, his mother, and his 7-year-old brother Gabriel usually stay outside Mcdonald’s to beg from passers-by,” reports Mara Cepeda on Rappler.
Because they don’t have electricity at home, the Cabrera kids do their homework nearby. Their mother works at a nearby food stall, which is also where the family sometimes sleeps.
In a separate report, Daniel told Dale Israel of Rappler that he wanted to be a cop or a doctor.
Sigh. If only our 9-year-old selves could see how hard the conditions are for Daniel.
