What was supposed to be a joyous occasion became a somber affair when a boy spent his 10th birthday at his father’s wake in Mandaluyong City.

ABS-CBN News reported today that the unnamed boy’s father was found dead on Sunday (Dec. 30) in Mandaluyong City, one day before the boy’s birthday.

The boy’s father was reportedly stabbed by a drinking buddy.

“We didn’t expect that this would happen. Everything was planned out. We would celebrate the boy’s birthday every New Year’s Eve, so the cake which [the boy] was going to blow out was ready,” the boy’s aunt told ABS-CBN News in Filipino.

While the boy also celebrated his birthday before the incident on Dec. 28, he still felt lonely because he was all alone on his birthday. His mother left for work abroad in October and was not allowed to go home by her employer in Saudi Arabia.

“My mom told me to keep thinking that she’s just by my side,” the boy said in Filipino, ABS-CBN News reported.

The boy also promised that he will study hard for his father. He added, “I will become a policeman so I can catch whoever [killed] my dad.”

Authorities are currently looking for the culprit behind the killing.

“Whoever did this, I hope you feel guilty, have mercy on his child, because he doesn’t deserve what happened to him,” the boy’s aunt said in Filipino on ABS-CBN News’ Umagang Kay Ganda.

The boy’s aunt and grandmother have agreed to become his guardians, they told ABS-CBN News.
