Everyone, except his boss, bought Yeb Saño’s tearful plea before a United Nations conference in Warsaw.
Saño, the Philippine climate change commissioner whose emotional appeal for action got a warm reception around the world, was reprimanded by Climate Change Commission chair Lucille Sering who sent “a strongly worded e-mail indicating her disapproval of Saño’s actions,” according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
PDI obtained a copy of her email, where Sering reminded Saño her request for him not to cry during his remarks. The commission chair said the negotiator should not have spoken if he couldn’t help crying before the body.
Sering likewise censured Saño for staging a hunger strike, saying that wasn’t part of what they agreed he would do in Warsaw. She reminded him that such actions can be done at an appropriate venue. She said his protest might be perceived as a “blackmail” for people to give in to his demands which shouldn’t be the case during negotiations.
The official appealed to Saño to stop his hunger strike since he would need all the strength as negotiations go underway during the conference. Otherwise, she’d send him packing to Manila.
